The lights are on! Bluffton Child Development Center celebrated lights on yesterday. The national recognition event stresses the importance of centers like BCDC that serve youth after school. Fred Rodabaugh, Bluffton mayor, read a brief proclamation and then students at the Center released yellow balloons as a send off.

Crystal Wilkinson, author of the short story collections Blackberries, Blackberries and Water Street, will give a public reading at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, in Bluffton University's Musselman Library.
Wilkinson, a faculty member in the Master of Fine Arts writing program at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., is currently a visiting professor and writer in residence at Morehead (Ky.) State University.
Progress! The Spring Street bridge really does span the Riley. Last week at this time, the bridge deck did not exist. Workers continue to make progress on the bridge despite setbacks in mid-summer.
