The Bluffton High School girls tennis team went indoors Thursday to knock off Lima Central Catholic to "win" the mythical Northwest Conference championship for the third straight year, 3-2.

BHS and LCC are the only two NWC schools to field tennis teams, so there is no official league title, but this rivalry has been hard-fought in recent years.

Taking their season record to 11-2 for the fall, coach Jesse Sensenig's netters became the third Pirate girls team to win that many matches in a season.

Florence Duffield

Florence R. Duffield, 98 of Bluffton, Ohio died at 1:25 p.m. Sept. 29, 2011 at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. She was born on May 12, 1913 in Van Buren to Matthew and Olive Lauer Duffield who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Van Buren High School and Bowling Green State University. She taught typing, shorthand, bookkeeping and other business courses at Bluffton High School for 47 years retiring in 1982.

Bluffton University's effort to expand an academic option for high school students-at Mennonite as well as public schools-is paying off.

This fall, 89 students are participating in the university's dual-enrollment program, which allows them to earn Bluffton credit by completing Bluffton courses while still at their high schools. That's 70 more students than a year ago, with nearly 70 percent of the total from three predominantly Mennonite schools.

Bettye Jeanne Vroman, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Sunset Village in Sylvania.

The daughter of Robert and Rowena [Herr] Lewis, she was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Bluffton. She was a graduate of Bluffton High School and Bluffton College where she majored in Music and English. She taught Music and English at the high school level for several years.

She married Robert Vroman in 1948 and moved to Toledo where he purchased a small ice cream company. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church and the Inverness Club.

Florence Duffield, 98 died at 1:25 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. Arrangements are incomplete at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Bluffton.
