Shizuo Tachibana of Japan will speak about the effects of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton.

Shizuo will share stories of hibakusha, survivors of the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. Now a teacher at Ha private preschool based on the Steiner method, Shizuo was the first member of the Hiroshima Mennonite Church.

First Mennonite is located at 101 S. Jackson St.

What year did you graduate from BHS?
I graduated in 2013.

Where are you attending school now and what are you studying?
I am attending University of North Carolina Wilmington and double majoring in Marine Biology and Environmental Science

As generation of Bluffton residents watched without acting, over the decades the Shannon Cemetery fell into disrepair.

Tombstones were broken. Several disappeared. Others were tossed into the creek bank while fallen trees knocked over additional stones. Well-meaning persons apparently replaced some stones in wrong locations.

Efforts to fix what damage was done over those decades began a few years ago as Dick Boehr took the project on. His cemetery proposal has previously been posted in the Icon.

Suddenly it's August. Members of the Bluffton High School band flag corp work on their fall shows. 

Gerald L. “Jerry” Joseph, 64, died on Friday, Aug. 7, at 3:34 p.m. at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born on Sept. 17, 1950 in Lima, Ohio, to John “Buck” Joseph, Jr. and Goldie (Courtright) Breece. His father survives in Arizona. His mother is deceased and dad, Robert (Vicki) Breece survives in Lakeview. On May 20, 1996, he married Kathy L. Mann and she survives in Harrod.

Jerry retired as an electrician from Continental Plastics, Lima, and DTR Manufacturing, Bluffton. He was a member of the Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533.

U6 outdoor soccer registration is now underway at Bluffton Family Recreation. U6 is for youth who have turned 4, but were under 6 by Aug. 1, 2015.

Practice begins Tuesday, Sept. 1, and games start Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Teams will be coached by parents. Players will learn basic foot skills and game play in this introductory soccer skill league. Games will be small-sided without a goalkeeper (5 vs. 5 play).
