And parent company purchases assets of M&R Redi-Mix, Pettisville

The Gerken Company of Napoleon has purchased the assets of M&R Redi-Mix, Inc. of Pettisville, Ohio. 

The purchase was effective Jan. 1, 2019. Gerken is known for its asphalt paving services and production and now adds concrete ready mix production to its  list of services.

Both Bluffton men’s and women’s baketball teams lost to Rose-Hulman on Saturday. Here is the women’s game. The men’s game is below.

The Bluffton University women's basketball team lost a hard fought, low-scoring game at Rose-Hulman, 45-37, on Saturday, Feb. 2. The setback dropped the Beavers to 7-14 on the year (5-9 HCAC). Rose-Hulman improved to 15-6 and is now 12-2 in the Heartland Conference.

She was active in United Methodist Church organizations

Mildred Maurine (Hall) Powell, 100, died at 4 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019.

Mildred was born to Ralph Underwood and Ada Pauline (Edmister) Hall on Aug. 8, 1918, in a farmhouse near Gilboa, Ohio. She attended Mt. Cory School until 1934 and graduated from Liberty High School in 1936. She married Leo Burnette Powell, on Aug. 24, 1940, in the Gilboa Methodist Episcopal Church. Mildred and 'Buzz' lived on a farm west of Benton Ridge on State Route 12 for 71 years. 'Buzz' died Aug. 6, 2011. 

Because of severe winter weather across the U.S. and an influenza outbreak, the American Red Cross has reissued an emergency plea for blood and platelet donations. During the month of January, snow, ice and cold temperatures resulted in more than 14,000 fewer donations, resulting in blood donations being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in.

You have an opportunity to donate at the American Red Cross blood drive at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 1-6 p.m. 

University to host original play on human trafficking

The Bowling Green High School Drama Club will perform “Lily’s Wings” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday,  Feb. 12, in Bluffton University’s Yoder Recital Hall.

The award-winning drama troupe’s original play explores the manipulative world of human trafficking from the perspective of a young girl.

The event is free and open to the public.
