Batch of arctic air is displaced and hovers over the Great Lakes

A wind chill warning remains in effect from today (Jan. 29) until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31. Dangerously cold wind chills are expected for all of northwest Ohio. Wind chills as low as 45 below zero expected.

The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.

J. Richard “Rich” Gratz, 94, died at 3:31 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

Rich was born on April 12, 1924, in Bluffton, Ohio, to the late Christian and Caddie (Cook) Gratz. On Sunday, Oct. 17, 1948, he married Betty L. (Roush) Gratz, who preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2002.

University student presentation Feb. 5

Jarod Siekman ’20 will present the Forum, “Mayan Mathematics and Different Numeration Systems,” at 11 a.m. on Feb. 5 in the Reading Room of Musselman Library.

A math education major, Siekman studied Mayan mathematics during a semester in Guatemala. He completed an extensive research project and also presented his research at the 46th Annual Mathematics Conference at Miami University.

The Village of Bluffton provides the Icon with the following information from the American Red Cross concerning potential frozen pipes.

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Republic Services will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, due to the extreme cold. The commercial and residential, trash and recycling pick-up scheduled for Wednesday Jan. 30 will be postponed until Thursday, Jan. 31. 

Richard Gratz, 94,  formerly of Bluffton, died at 3:31 a.m., Jan. 28, 2018, at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. Funeral arrangements in incomplete.
