Bluffton University stages student-directed one acts Dec. 1-2
Bluffton University students will direct a series of one-act plays in Ramseyer Auditorium on Dec. 1 and 2, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night. General admission is $1; all tickets can be purchased at the door.
The plays are completely student-run shows staged by students in Dr. Melissa Friesen's Play Direction class, which is required for all theatre minors. The students had to read through published collections of 10-minute plays, then choose a compelling play with two or three actors that they would enjoy directing.
From there, the student directors were responsible for holding open auditions and callbacks, choosing actors, coordinating rehearsal times and costume and set design, and finally staging the production.
The directors and their plays include:
oSarah Diller of Bluffton, Ohio, directing "Outcome," by S.W. Senek, about a couple discussing their feelings about having a baby.
oJosh Carter of Holland, Ohio, directing "An Interview," by David Mamet, in which an attorney tries to talk his way out of hell.
oKait Crawford of Elmore, Ohio, directing "The Office," by Kate Hoffower, a comedy about how three women overcome boredom at work.
oLibby Julien of North Baltimore, Ohio, directing "After," by Carol K. Mack, wherein a journalist discovers the land of Ever After, complete with a tour guide.
oAaron Yost of Pinetop, Ariz., directing "On the Porch One Crisp Spring Morning," by Alex Dremann, a dark comedy in which a mother and daughter's morning coffee turns bitter.
oScott Troyer of Sugarcreek, Ohio, directing "Precipice," by William Mastrosimone, which features a mountainside, a foggy evening and an awful first date.
o Kim Rupert of Ottawa, Ohio, directing "Solomon," by Ted Swartz and the late Lee Eshleman, which displays a humorous view of the biblical book Song of Solomon.
The cast for the one acts consists of Bluffton University students and staff, including Dan Stanowick, assistant director of Marbeck Center; Kathy Dickson, director of career development; and Jessica Wright, campus visit coordinator. Student cast members include T.J. Benrowski of Humboldt, Tenn.; Ryan Mooney of Continental, Ohio; Kristie Corney of Bucyrus, Ohio; Stephanie Finn of Toledo, Ohio; Brea Quellhorst of Wapakoneta, Ohio; Naomi Raber and Matt Weaver, both of Millersburg, Ohio; Eliot Nofziger of Archbold, Ohio; Brian Timpe of Swanton, Ohio; Brit Steele of Bluffton, Ohio; Joni Martin of Elida, Ohio; and Kristin Beckman of Ottawa, Ohio.
