Bluffton to host winter instrumental concert Feb. 20
An afternoon of jazz and "colors" is in store at Bluffton University's annual winter instrumental concert, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, in Yoder Recital Hall. Featuring Bluffton's Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band, the concert is free and open to the public.
Jazz ensemble
Dr. Adam Schattschneider, professor of music, will direct the Jazz Ensemble in six numbers, including a "Tribute to Miles" comprising four songs by the late trumpeter and composer Miles Davis: "So What," "All Blues," "Seven Steps to Heaven" and "Milestones."
Also on the Jazz Ensemble program are arrangements of "My Foolish Heart," featuring a saxophone solo by Kitanya Murray, a Bluffton junior from Findlay; W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues"; Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood"; "Nostalgia in Times Square" by Charles Mingus; and "Cute" by Neal Hefti.
Concert band
"Colors" is the theme of the Concert Band program, conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Boehm, professor of music. The band will perform Loris Chobanian's "Colors," which was commissioned by the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association for its honors concert band several years ago. The piece features various colors of percussion instruments as well as slide whistles and other sounds.
The band will also present Brian Balmages' "Heroes of Destiny," highlighting the brass section plus percussion; "Prism" by Steve Shafer; and "Lamentations" by Justin Merritt. In addition, the Chamber Winds ensemble will perform three movements from "Carnaevale" by Igor Stravinsky.
