Volleyball: Bluffton takes down Ohio Valley before falling to Marietta

Opening up the second day of the Marietta tournament, the Bluffton Beavers took on the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots, winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-14). The Beavers moved to 2-1 and into the finals of the tournament against host Marietta College.
Leading the Beaver offense were Brooke Ruffer (Stryker), hitting .455 with six kills, and fellow freshman Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial), hitting .444 with five kills.
The defense was led by senior Heather Schierer (Crescent Springs, Ky./St. Henry) with nine digs. Freshman Mackenzie Lauber (Mansfield/Madison) set up the offense with 22 assists and added three kills, hitting at a .600 clip for the Beavers. Junior Kyleigh Whitsel (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) made for a tough serving opponent for the Scots, putting away four aces, followed by Hailey Phillips (Malinta/Patrick Henry) with three aces.
In the final match of the weekend, the Beavers took on host Marietta College for the tournament title. After downing Marietta in the first set 25-22, the Pioneers came back to take down the Beavers in the next three sets, winning 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22). Lauber set up the offense with 36 assists. The trio of freshman hitters carried the offense with 34 kills between then, Brown and Ruffer with 12 apiece and Parmenter with 10 hammers.
Defensively speaking, senior libero Heather Schierer paced the team with 20 digs, followed by a pair of juniors. Phillips tallied 12 and Krohn picked 10 digs, respectively.
The Beavers finished the tournament with a second place finish and 2-2 start to the season. For their stellar performances on the weekend, seniors Brooke Distel and Heather Schierer were named to the All-Tournament team along with freshman Mackenzie Lauber.
The Beavers' home opener is this Wednesday, Sept. 5, against the Polar Bears of ONU at 7 p.m.
