Volleyball: Beavers take down Adrian before falling to Trine

The Beavers of Bluffton University started off the day with a 3-1 victory over Adrian College (25-16, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21). Freshman outsides Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) and Brooke Ruffer (Stryker) led the Beaver offense once again with 10 and nine kills respectively. Mackenzie Lauber (Mansfield/Madison) and Jenny Brown (St Marys/Memorial) both added seven hammers. Senior Brooke Distel (Carey) added a respectable five kills with an impressive .556 hitting percentage. Lauber set up the offense with 31 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Heather Schierer (Crescent Springs, Ky./St. Henry) had 14 shovels, followed by seven from junior Lindsay Krohn (Marysville, Ind./New Washington). Distel rounded out the defensive effort with three block assists.
The second match of the day did not go as well for the Beavers. After taking the first set from Trine University 25-18, the Beavers of Bluffton dropped the next three, the first two by a combined four points.
Lauber spread out the sets, getting 24 assists with help from Kyleigh Whitsel (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) who handed out eight. The Beaver attack was once again led by Ruffer with nine kills. Parmenter and Distel both slammed six. Brown added five kills of her own.
The defense was on fire with three Beavers posting double-digit digs. Schierer tallied an impressive 22 digs, followed by Hailey Phillips (Malinta/Patrick Henry) with 16 and Whitsel at 12. Lauber, Ruffer and Krohn all added eight digs, respectively.
The Beavers ended the day with a record of 4-3. Bluffton returns to action at Thomas More on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
