University pops concert April 12 in Founders
Four Bluffton University musical ensembles will come together Friday, April 12, to present the annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall. The concert is free and open to the public; donations will be accepted for program costs, with any excess funds going toward music scholarships.
The evening will begin with jazz from the university’s Jazz Ensemble, directed by adjunct instructor Paul Baransy. The ensemble will also perform on two numbers with the University Chorale, conducted by Dr. Jon C. Peterson, an assistant professor of music.
Baransy will conduct the Concert Band as well. Among the soloists accompanying the band will be Jodi Diller, Bluffton’s music department administrative assistant, on “The Typewriter,” and 1973 Bluffton graduate Charles Doepker on a Baransy arrangement of “Clarinet Polka.” Doepker, of Ottawa, Ohio, has returned to performing after nearly losing a finger in an industrial accident several years ago.
Dr. Mark J. Suderman, a professor of music, will conduct Camerata Singers on “Beaver Fugue,” a slight, Bluffton-esque reconfiguration of “Geographical Fugue,” by Ernst Toch.
