ONU prof from Bluffton research article receives national attention
Bluffton resident, Brian Myers, Ohio Northern University associate professor of chemistry, has co-written an article, “Profiles in Chemistry: A Historical Perspective on the National Organic Symposium,” which will be featured in the June issue of The Journal of Organic Chemistry.
Co-authored with Edward Fenton, associate professor of chemistry at Franklin and Marshall College, the article also will be distributed to attendees of the 43rd annual National Organic Chemistry Symposium (NOS) at the University of Washington on June 23. Fenton and Myers will present two posters on the topic at the meeting. In addition, the leading chemistry news magazine, Chemical and Engineering News, is going to highlight the research paper.
Myers said the 56-page article has created new knowledge that benefits the worldwide organic chemistry community by documenting the history of the NOS and, by extension, organic chemistry in the U.S. over the past 87 years.
“Because of this article’s anticipated significant impact, The Journal of Organic Chemistry’s editor invited my collaborator, Edward Fenton, and I to prepare the cover art for the June 21, 2013, issue where the manuscript will be released in its final form,” Myers said.
“We are very excited about this because The Journal of Organic Chemistry is widely considered to be the premier journal in the field. Finally, I was humbled to learn that the NOS executive officer obtained special permission from the journal to reproduce the manuscript in the attendee program books for the upcoming NOS meeting in Seattle, which will be attended by about 600 chemists.”
The NOS is the premier event sponsored by the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry (ORGN) and has been held in odd-numbered years since 1925, with the exceptions of 1943 and 1945. During the 42 symposia, 332 chemists have given 549 plenary lectures.
