Powered by an early first half goal from sophomore forward Victoria Heflin, the Mount St Joseph Lions were able to sneak their way past the Bluffton University Beavers in Cincinnati on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Bluffton fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in HCAC play thanks to a third straight one-goal setback, while Mount St. Joseph improved to 3-8-1, but an undefeated 2-0 in Heartland Conference action.
Despite the Beavers outshooting the Lions 15-6, including a 10-3 margin in the first period, MSJ's junior keeper Madison Freeman came up with 10 big saves to earn a shutout victory. Bluffton goalkeeper Ashley Knippen (Wapakoneta) had three saves in the losing effort. Senior Aimee Whitmer (Grand Rapids/Otsego) racked up 10 shots for the Beavers.
The Beavers will hit the road on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they battle Earlham College in a doubleheader with the men. The women's contest is slated for 1 p.m. in Richmond, Ind. Bluffton will return to the Sears Complex for the first time in three weeks as they take on the Anderson University Ravens next Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m.
