Volleyball splits on day one of HCAC/OAC Crossover
September 19, 2014
BLUFFTON, Ohio - The HCAC/OAC Crossover took its turn in the Sommer Center with eight schools descending on Bluffton University on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. The first opponent Bluffton faced to open the tournament was Capital. The Crusaders took the first set of the match from Bluffton by two points (25-23), and after that, the Beavers were in control to win the next three sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-18).
SARA ROTH (Findlay/Van Buren) dished out 45 assists in the victory over Capital. The offense was led by outside hitters KENDRA PARMENTER (Grove City) and MACKENZIE MCFARLIN (Ashland) who drove home 16 kills each, along with JENNY BROWN (St. Marys/Memorial) who added 10 kills of her own. From the service line, McFarlin had five aces while the defense was led by freshman SYDNEY MOHLER (Lima/Central Catholic) who picked up 20 digs for the victors.
After a well-deserved break, the Beavers were back on the court across the net from the Polar Bears. Even though Bluffton lost to the same Ohio Northern squad a little over a week ago, the Beavers came out ready to go against Ohio Northern and took set one, 25-22. While Bluffton fought hard the next three sets as well, the Polar Bears came out on top, taking the match with set scores of 25-10, 26-24 and 25-11.
Leading the Beavers at the net was Brown with 11 kills and just one error on 16 attempts, resulting in a blistering .625 hitting average. McFarlin had another impressive match as well, tallying 14 kills and hitting .355. Roth had 44 assists and 12 digs. Mohler added 19 pickups and ERIN HELMS (Arlington) supplied 14 digs of her own.
The Beavers return to play on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m to face Baldwin-Wallace and Muskingum, respectively.
