Feb. 29 is "just another day" to Zachary Basinger
Here’s the second Icon series of chats with viewers who have the great fortune of being born on Feb. 29. To read our earlier interview with Reagan Mittendorf, click here.
Zachary Basinger says that it’s just another day.
The “just another day” is Feb. 29. On it he’ll celebrate his 16th or 4th birthday, since he is a leap year baby.
The Bluffton High School sophomore attended Pandora-Gilboa schools before his family moved to Bluffton last summer.
Even though it's just another day, his most recent Feb. 29 birthday memory made him laugh. It goes like this:
“I was in the sixth grade at Pandora-Gilboa. My teacher told me to go to the office to get change for a $20.
“When I returned the lights in the classroom were off and when the lights went on my classmates were there to celebrate my 3rd birthday. It was a great fiasco. My teacher made cupcakes – for 3-year-olds – for all my classmates.”
This year Zachary says that he’ll come to school on Monday and it will be “no big deal.”
He’s class schedule includes English, Spanish, Geometry, Home Economics, Biology and American History. His favorite is Biology because, “it’s different.”
He plays soccer and was on this year’s BHS varsity team. He is also on a traveling soccer team and is a midfielder.
Our conversation switch from leap year to other things. For example, Zachary, if you could visit any country in the world what would it be?
After thinking, his response was, “I’d like to visit Russia and see the Kremlin.”
Where do you think you will be when you celebrate your birthday on Feb. 29, 2020? Answer: “Hopefully in college, wherever that will be. I’m interested in studying medicine.”
What’s your favorite pizza?
“Sausage and green peppers.”
Is there a famous person you’d like to have lunch with?
Again, after a moment of thought" “I’d like to have lunch with the president of the United States.”
Happy birthday, Zachary, even if you do think that Feb. 29 is just another day.
