Women’s studies presentation coming to Bluffton University on March 22
Dr. Ilana Luna, assistant professor of Latin American studies at Arizona State University, will present her speech titled “Behind the Lens: Mexican Women Make Movies” for Forum at 11 a.m. on March 22 in Founders Hall. This is Bluffton’s annual Women’s Studies Forum. The event is free and open to the public.
The author of a forthcoming book on gender and film adaptation will describe how the financial restructuring of the Mexican film industry opened doors for women filmmakers. Luna will focus on the importance of self-representation in an industry that has historically excluded women from decision-making roles.
Luna is an assistant professor of Latin American Studies at Arizona State University’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. She received her doctorate in Hispanic languages and literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the author of “Subversive Screening: Film Adaptation, Gender and Genre in Mexico.”
