FLORENCE, Ky. - The Bluffton University baseball team traveled to Kentucky for a home game with Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, April 9, but it was the Lions who took advantage of the change of venue with a 9-2 victory in the HCAC series lidlifter. The Beavers fell to 6-16 overall and 1-8 in the Heartland Conference on a bitterly cold Saturday, while MSJ upped its season mark to 16-7 and 5-5 in the HCAC.
A dropped fly in the top of the first helped Mount St. Joseph take a quick 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of unearned runs. MSJ and Bluffton traded single tallies in the second, making the score 4-1 after two. Tanner Hamilton (Centerville) answered a Nick Browning homer with an RBI single that picked up Tommy Nobile (Reynoldsburg) who led off the frame with a two-bagger.
The Lions added two scores in the third for a 6-1 lead before Jason Colliver's (Beavercreek) RBI groundout pulled the Beavers within four runs heading to the fourth inning. Solo runs by the visitors on the scoreboard in the fifth, eighth and ninth pushed the final score to 9-2.
Colliver and Colin Gregory (Fremont/Clyde) notched two hits apiece for the Beavers. Junior Jaylen Von Sossan (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season after allowing seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. Dyson Bowman (Coshocton) was electric in 3.2 innings of one-run relief, fanning seven Lions against just one walk and four hits.
The Beavers will go back to work on Sunday, April 10, at 12 p.m. when they play the first of two more games against the Lions in Florence, Ky.
