BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team hosted the Anderson Ravens on a sunny but brisk day at Bluffton Field. It was a low scoring affair in both games, but the Ravens were able to defeat the Beavers twice, 3-0 and 2-1. The losses dropped Bluffton to 14-18 (2-8 HCAC) on the season, while Anderson improved to 19-10 (10-2 HCAC) on the year.
Game one started out with the visiting team getting on the board first after an RBI single that made it 1-0. Bluffton couldn’t get anything going offensively and Anderson notched two more runs in the fourth to make it a 3-0 spread. The Beavers had a chance to score in the fifth with runners on first and third, but were unable to convert as they fell in the first game, 3-0.
JOSIE McELROY (Mt. Orab/Western Brown) connected with all of Bluffton’s hits as she went 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of singles.
Taking the loss was JESSIE MADZIA (Tuslaw/Massillon) who slipped to 4-8 on the season as she gave up three runs on eight hits with an even 100 pitches.
The Ravens opened up game two taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning with fielder’s choice RBI and an RBI double that went down the left field line. Both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth innings before the Beavers finally got on the board after a single by MAKENZIE SCHMIDT (Caledonia/River Valley) picked up KELSI WILSON (Pataskala/Licking Heights) in the fifth. Despite solid defensive play, Bluffton couldn’t get anything going at the dish as the Ravens capped the sweep with a 2-1 victory.
The Beavers had a total of four hits in the nightcap with Schmidt notching a hit and the only Bluffton RBI. Kelsi Wilson, NICOLE THOMAS (Tontogany/Otsego) and MOLLY HABERMAN (Port Clinton) each connected with a hit apiece.
Taking the mound for game two was Nicole Thomas who went 5.2 innings, walking six batters and striking out one. Netting 104 pitches, Thomas allowed two runs off only five hits. EMILY SCUPHOLM (Cuyahoga Falls/Our Lady of the Elms) finished the day for Bluffton, tossing the final 1.1 innings while allowing no hits with a strikeout and a walk.
The Beavers will hope to avenge the pair of losses when they travel to Adrian on Friday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m. You can follow the action on our Twitter account @Bluffton_sports.
