BLUFFTON, Ohio - Tuesday afternoon turned cold at Memorial Field in more ways than one with the temperature dropping quickly as game time approached. The Quakers missed the memo as Earlham used a 10-run third to cap off the season sweep at Bluffton on April 26. Bluffton fell to 12-21 overall and 7-13 in the Heartland Conference, while Earlham upped its season mark to 24-10 and 13-8 in the HCAC.
Senior Tommy Nobile (Reynoldsburg) led off the bottom of the second with a two-bagger down the left field line and he moved up 90 feet when a pickoff attempt sailed into center field. Colin Gregory (Fremont/Clyde) picked him up with a ground ball to third, giving the Beavers their first lead in the series.
The Quakers responded emphatically in the top of the third, plating 10 runs on six hits, two errors, three walks and a couple wild pitches. Earlham made it 11-1 with a run in the fourth before Bluffton scratched out a tally in the fifth when Luke Hickey (Toledo/Whitmer) singled home Clayton Siders (Delaware/Worthington Christian).
Two Quaker scores in the seventh and four more in the ninth added up to a 17-2 shellacking of the home Beavers.
Seniors Jason Colliver (Beavercreek) and Nobile paced the Bluffton offense with two hits apiece. The Beavers went through eight pitchers with junior starter Jaylen Von Sossan (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) taking the loss. He gave up seven runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Von Sossan, Austin Every (Zanesville/West Muskingum) and Paul Frey (Kirby/Riverdale) all finished with two strikeouts for Bluffton.
The Beavers are back at Memorial Field for their final home series of the season on Friday, April 29. The lidlifter is slated for 4:15 p.m. with Senior Day introductions kicking off at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday. The doubleheader with Hanover College starts at noon on Saturday.
