60 in 6 initiative aims to aid new-student transition at university
In its second year, the 60 in 6 initiative, coordinated by the office of student involvement, seeks to provide at least 60 campus events in the first six weeks of the academic year.
The initiative will begin on Friday, Aug. 26, the day first-year students move in, and concludes Sunday, Oct. 9. Events range from capture the flag to student involvement and church fairs.
“Every event is an opportunity for students to experience new things in a new setting,” said Brent Schroeder, assistant director of the university event complex. “The initiative allows students to meet new people, some of whom may become lifelong friends and all of whom will help them learn and grow.”
The effort is based on studies in higher education which indicate the first six weeks of the academic year are crucial for students transitioning to unfamiliar surroundings. One key to a successful transition is social engagement and community involvement.
By offering 60 events in six weeks (an average of more than one event per day) new students will have plenty of opportunities to attend events, meet new people and form friendships with peers who will form a network of support and growth. This network will then support new students through the challenges they face in their college careers, both academically and emotionally.
