Ohio Wesleyan sweeps Beaver volleyball

DELAWARE, Ohio - Ohio Wesleyan put on a hitting clinic Wednesday evening en route to a sweep of the Bluffton University volleyball team in Branch Rickey Arena. The Beavers slipped to 3-2 on the season while OWU upped its mark to 4-1.
Bluffton led 10-8 in the lidlifter before the home team turned it around with a 7-2 spurt for a 15-12 advantage. The Battling Bishops cruised from there, taking set one by a 25-19 margin. The visitors battled back from an 11-7 deficit to go up 17-15, but Ohio Wesleyan answered the call with a 25-21 victory for a 2-0 lead. The Beavers fell behind 8-3 in set three and were never able to make any inroads as OWU capped the sweep with a 25-18 win in the clincher.
Senior Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) was impeccable, hitting .524 with 12 kills against just one error on only 21 swings. Fellow senior MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) and sophomore Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) added nine and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) handed out 31 assists, while junior libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic chipped in with 20 digs and three aces.
The Beavers return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when Bluffton hosts Heidelberg in the first match of the fourth annual Sommer Center Spiketacular on Court 1. Coach Yarnell and his squad will also meet regional-power DePauw at approximately 8 p.m. Friday night, also on Court 1.
