Jenera church commemorates 185th anniversary of "Shipwreck Sunday"
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jenera, will observe the annual Shipwreck Remembrance on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The services, at 8 and 10:30 a.m. recalls the passengers on the “Famous Dove” when it was shipwrecked off the east coast of the United States on Sept.17, 1831. Many of the passengers coming from Germany were the founders of Trinity.
During a storm, the passengers prayed and sang hymns while on the wrecked ship and when they safely reached land, they promised to observe Sept. 17 in thanks to God, to the third and fourth generations, this being the 185th year.
Pastor Al Schmitzer will lead the service and the Choir will sing “Wings of the Dawn.”
