Men's soccer drops home opener to Wittenberg
September 20, 2016
BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team netted the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half, but a pair of late Wittenberg tallies spoiled the home opener for the Beavers on a hot and humid Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016. The Tigers improved to 3-4 on the season, while Bluffton dipped to 2-4.
Alec Mast (Millersburg/Hiland) connected with Blake Hershberger (Canton/McKinley) in minute 47, making the score 1-1 early in the second period. However, Wittenberg hit paydirt in minute 74 and again with just over six minutes to play en route to a 3-1 victory at the Sears Complex.
The visitors finished with a 24-7 edge in shots and an 11-1 margin on corner kicks. Wittenberg was also whistled for eight more fouls (12-4).
Grant Stutzman (Sugarcreek/Hiland) led the hosts with four shot attempts, including two on frame. Fellow senior Matt Hardman-Zimmerman (Forest City, Penn.) kept the Beavers in the match with eight saves.
The Beavers will look to regain their winning ways when they host Ohio Christian and Finlandia this weekend. Bluffton welcomes the OCU Trailblazers for a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Sept. 24. Come out and support your Beavers!
