Volleyball knocks off Denison in four sets

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team continued its winning ways as it traveled to Granville for a matchup with the Denison University Big Red. The home team was just one night removed from taking a set off NCAC foe and #5 ranked Wittenberg University. Denison slipped to 6-11 overall while the Beavers improved to 13-7 heading into fall break.
Bluffton fell in set one, 25-19, but the Beavers stepped up their serve receive and took the next three sets (25-19, 29-27, 25-20). The visitors let a 21-13 spread slip away in the third set as Denison led 26-25 before Bluffton scored four of the next five points for a 29-27 victory. The clincher saw Bluffton down 12-4, but the Beavers outscored the Big Red 21-8 to cap off the quality win.
Senior captain MACKENZIE MCFARLIN (Ashland) hammered 19 kills and hit .288 for the match. BETHANY MARTINI (Pickerington/North) and LAUREN WEISGARBER (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) were close behind with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Weisgarber and JESSIE GIBSON (Warsaw/River View) were a wall at the net with four and three blocks for the victors.
Sophomore sensation ERIN WEISGARBER (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) doled out 39 assists and also came up with 16 digs. SYDNEY MOHLER (Lima/Central Catholic) continued to impress with 24 digs and three aces, while BECCA TOURNEY (Columbia City, Ind.) came up with 13 pickups. CASEY CLARK (Lima/Central Catholic) fired two aces for the victors and picked up 10 digs. Sophomore Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) added 10 digs as well.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they travel to take on “the other purple school” at Defiance. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m. in the Weaner Center.
