New structure in works for Bluffton police department
Bluffton council will act on legislation on Monday created a new rank structure for the village police department.
Currently the department operates with a chief and a sergeant. All other police department members are officers.
The new structure, to be acted upon as an emergency ordinance – meaning passage required one read and the ordinance takes effect immediately - calls for the following structure:
1 – Police chief (head of department)
2 – Police lieutenant (village may or may not appoint someone to this position)
3 – Police sergeant (no more than 2 at any time)
4 – Police corporal (no limitations on numbers)
5 – Police officer (no limitations on numbers)
A description of duties of these five levels is in the council package attached at the bottom of this story.
