BHS boys' head to Division III district play
Bluffton High School boys’ basketball team upset Carey tonight in the Division III sectional finals at Elida 50 to 39.
Bluffton at 13-11 (number 6 seed) surprised Carey (number 4 seed), who finished the season at 15-8.
The Pirates led 13-10 after one period. The game was tied 22-22 at halftime. BHS outscored the Blue Devils 13 to 5 in the third period, taking a 35-27 lead. Bluffton then outscored Carey 15 to 12 in the final period.
Gabe Denecker led Bluffton with 22 points.
The Pirates advanced to the sectional finals by defeating Coldwater for the second tournament season in a row earlier in the week. BHS won that game 60 to 59.
Playing against Coldwater, Bluffton led 19-13 after period one. Coldwater took a 28-24 halftime lead and led 43-42 after three periods. BHS outscore the MAC team 18 to 16 in the final period.
Luke Denecker led the Pirates with 19, Gabe Denecker with 12 and Zane Myers with 10.
