Art and dissidence in Cuba colloquium theme
Phil Sugden, assistant professor of art at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium “Activismo: Art & Dissidence in Cuba” at 4 p.m. on April 7 in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall. It is free and open to the public.
In December 2015, Sugden and Carole Elchert, assistant professor communication at the University of Findlay, traveled to Havana, Cuba, to interview artists and gather footage for the film. The documentary focuses on six of Cuba's prominent artists and explores the role of art as a form of activism or dissidence.
Sugden will discuss the couple’s findings from the trip, as well as struggles faced while filming in Cuba. A teaser for the documentary will also be shared. The documentary is fully written, directed and produced by Sugden and Elchert.
