Volleyball holds off IU-East in five sets
September 6, 2017
RICHMOND, Ind. - The Bluffton University volleyball team got everything IU-East had, but the Beavers held on for a 15-12 victory in the clinching fifth set. Bluffton improved to 4-1, while the Red Wolves slipped to 3-11 on the season.
The Beavers were on the verge of wrapping it up in four, up 20-15, before missed serves fueled an IU-East rally that led to their 26-24 win. Bluffton fell behind 3-1 in the fifth, but turned it around to take the set with a 15-12 margin in the finale!
HCAC Player of the Week Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) and freshman Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) fueled Bluffton's offense on the outside, knocking down 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Junior Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) added seven winners against just one error for a .300 hitting percentage.
Junior ringmaster Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) showed her versatility with team highs of 42 assists and 22 digs. Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) added 20 digs and six assists. Fellow juniors Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) and Martini chipped in with 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Bluffton makes the short trip to Tiffin this weekend for the No One Fights Alone Invitational at Heidelberg University. The Beavers open with #4 Wittenberg at 5:30 PM on Friday, Sept. 8, before Saturday matchups with Thomas More and the host Student Princes.
