Volleyball splits at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team traveled to Baldwin Wallace for the OAC/HCAC Crossover Tournament. The Beavers came out with a 1-1 record on the opening day of play. They took down John Carroll in the first match (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) but fell short to undefeated Baldwin Wallace (16-0), losing in three sets (25-16, 27-25, 25-20).
Junior Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) led the Bluffton attack with 16 kills and eight digs in the victory over JCU. She was supported by Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind.), who had six kills, and Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) with five putdowns. Junior Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) doled out 31 assists and chipped in with five kills. Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) led the defense with 17 digs and three aces.
The Beavers fought hard in match two, but fell to the host Yellow Jackets in three sets. Martini and Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) led the way with an outstanding 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Mohler was determined to not let anything drop in the back row and came up with a match-high 26 digs. Bower and Martini chipped in nine and eight digs for the visitors. Weisgarber finished with 29 assists and five digs.
Bluffton (8-6) is back at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday for day two of the OAC/HCAC Crossover. The Beavers take on Capital (7-8) at 10 a.m. before tackling Ohio Northern (12-3) at 2 p.m.
