NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - On the night that senior Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) became the all the time leader in digs, the Bluffton University volleyball team locked up a berth in the upcoming Heartland Conference tournament! Bluffton improved to 16-10 and 6-2 in the HCAC, while Manchester slipped to 11-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
The home Spartans were up to the task in set one, taking down Bluffton 25-23 to open their final night of home volleyball. Set two saw the Beavers respond with a dominating 25-17 victory that was not as close as the final score indicated as Bluffton led 18-9 late in the set. Manchester would not go away, but the visitors wrapped up the night with a pair of close wins (25-22 and 25-20).
Mohler etched her name at the top of the record books with 21 digs, giving her 2,117 for her career! She broke Brittany Roth's mark of 2,108 in the process. It was a night of double-doubles as Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) torched the Spartans with 20 kills and 17 digs, while fellow junior Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) doled out 45 assists to go along with her 14 digs. Martini also fired a match-high three aces.
Freshman Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) added nine kills and five blocks, while Sarah Heydinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) chipped in with eight kills and three blocks. Weisgarber and Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) tacked on three blocks each.
Bluffton will wrap up the regular season portion of its 2017 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a tri-match against Earlham College and Illinois Tech. The Senior Day festivities will take place in the Sommer Center prior to the 1 p.m. Earlham contest.
