Keeney Peace Lecture focus on the state of nonviolence
Sarah Thompson, 2018 Generations Fellow, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, will present Bluffton University’s 2018 Keeney Peace Lecture during the Jan. 30 Forum, “From Charlottesville to Congo to Cleveland: The State of Nonviolence,” at 11 a.m. in Yoder Recital Hall.
Named executive director of Christian Peacemaker Teams in 2014, Thompson has a long history of peace and advocacy work. A graduate of Spelman College and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Thompson’s experience includes volunteer work for Mennonite World Conference and Mennonite Central Committee in Jerusalem, Washington, D.C. and Elkhart, Ind., her hometown. Thompson has also traveled across the world through activist and volunteer work with feminist anti-war movements, as a Spanish translator and through a Fulbright Scholarship. She traveled extensively for CPT to build partnerships in order to transform violence and oppression.
Bluffton’s Keeney Peace Lectureship was established in 1978 by the family of William Sr. and Kathryn Keeney to express appreciation for Bluffton’s influence and to strengthen the continuing peace witness among the community.
