World War I was ending and a flu epidemic was well underway. This was 1918, the year that St. Rita’s opened its doors in the Lima community.

Mercy Heath – St. Rita’s Medical Center celebrates 100 years of medical service to the surrounding communities with a community celebration on June 9.

All are invited to the Saturday event that will offer fun, games and history from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The goal of the community celebration is to evoke a feeling of pride in the community and emphasize the St. Rita’s tradition of care.

As we head into 2018, our centennial events will all evolve around the theme of The Red Door of Mercy, inspired by the poem by Mary Wickham, RSM. This is to direct focus and reinforce Mercy Health – St. Rita’s mission of mercy, which is not only a reflection of our past but also is key to our future.

“It was 100 years ago that the Sisters of Mercy came to Lima with just their faith, drive, and compassion. Answering the call of the community, they opened St. Rita’s before the hospital was even fully constructed to aid in the pandemic flu of 1918. St. Rita’s responded to the most critical needs of our community then, and we continue to respond today,” said Bob Baxter, president and CEO, Mercy Health – Toledo / Lima. “But we’re not done yet. We are more prepared than ever to continue to serve our community for the next century to come.“

The celebratory community-wide event will be held outside, across the street from the hospital. Guests will enjoy family-friendly activities and entertainment including games – such as a giant operation game, touch-a-truck area, balloon art, etc. Additionally, the event will feature exercise and cooking demonstrations with Mercy Health experts.

Come enjoy a grab-and-go lunch and/or snacks provided along with a celebratory 100 year treat! A historical installation will highlight our past 100 years, which will feature a photo mosaic that will represent the hospital and the community.

There will be three primary entrances to the event where guests will be greeted by volunteers with an activity map. This map will be your guide as you explore the different areas and various activities offered.

Guests are asked to be aware that there will be some changes in the parking lots in preparation for the celebration. There will be barriers in certain areas of the parking lots and heavier traffic flow. As this happens, signs will be put up to direct traffic.
