Joan Basinger operated the first state-licensed day care in Putnam County
Joan Basinger, 86, died Jan. 22, 2019, at Lima Memorial Health System. Joan was born Jan. 3, 1933 in Lima, Ohio to the late Ralph and Francis (Hile) Cheney. On March 6, 1957, she married Clarence Kenneth Basinger who survives.
Joan graduated from Lima Central High School. She worked as a telephone operator and later a secretary at Lima Telephone Company. Joan also worked at Wittgor in Columbus Grove.
She owned and operated Basinger's Daycare Center which was the first state licensed daycare center in Putnam County. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Columbus Grove and the Grange. oan was a past den mother for the Cub Scouts.
Survivors also include three children, Eric (Karen R.) Basinger of Columbus Grove, Karen Basinger of Columbus, Ohio, Aaron Basinger of West Palm Beach, Florida; two brothers, Harold (Norma) Cheney of Lima, Ronald (Cora) Cheney of Bensonville, Illinois,and several nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Cheney; and two sisters, Helen Cheney and Lois Massman.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton. Pastor James Basinger officiating. Burial will be in Reformed Mennonite Cemetery, Bluffton.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association.
