Several Veterans Day programs planned in Bluffton
Here are the Bluffton American Legion Post 382 ceremonies planned for Veterans Day in Bluffton.
Cheryl and Thom Craig and Larry Core will be at the Bluffton Elementary School at 8:15 a.m. to show 4th graders the correct procedure on folding the American flag. Students will participate.
Members of Bluffton American Legion Post 382, Boy Scouts and Bluffton High School students will meet in the gym at 8 a.m. for a ceremony about Veterans Day.
Fred Rodabaugh, past Commander of the Bluffton American Legion will speak briefly and Eagle Scout Neil Metzger, will speak about the correct procedure of retiring a flag. Flags will be burnt in accordance to regulations.
Members of the post will be visiting Mennonite Memorial Home at 11 a.m., Hilty Memorial Home at 1:30 p.m. and Maple Crest at 3 p.m. All veterans and their spouses and the public are encouraged to attend all the events.
The history of Veterans Day began in 1919, with President Woodrow Wilson's proclamation of Armistice Day, to be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory."
In 1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name of the federal holiday to Veterans Day, acknowledging millions of World War Il and Korean War veterans in addition to those of World War l.
