Trivia night, postcard penpals, The Book Bag and more greets you in January

It's all at the Bluffton Public Library

It's a new year (almost) and the Bluffton Public Library is ready. Here's the January calendar at the library. At the bottom of the story are details you need to know about checking out material.

Bluffton Public Library Postcard Penpals - ​Readers advisory for Pre K-12th Grade:​ Not sure what to read next? We are here to help. ​Email Youth Services ([email protected]) the following info:
• name and address (for library use only),
• age
• grade
• and favorite book
Your child will receive a postcard of ideas for their next read.

The library announces ​The Book Bag - A Library Subscription Service​. The program allows community members to request a monthly themed or specially curated bag of items from the library collection along with an activity.

The Book Bag checks out for four weeks, with new bags being automatically prepared for pickup the next month. Registration for The Book Bag is open, with the program starting ​January 2021. ​This program is open to all ages. Noon Book Group via Zoom ​meets ​Jan. 6 t​ o discuss ​Norwegian by Night​ by Derek B. Miller. The February book will be ​The Nickel Boys b​y Colson Whitehead.

Adult patrons may check out a ​Book Group Book Bundle​ containing the upcoming discussion titles through April. Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month at noon. Call the library or email [email protected] for more information and to register.

Painting with Water Take & Makes:​ ​Pages from ​Be Happy: Just Add Water​ will be available for pickup at the library starting ​Jan. 4 ​and while supplies last. Each kit consists of 1 special paint page from the book and a paintbrush (selection of pages is random). Call or stop by the library to request, starting Jan. 4​.​ Open to adults and teens.

​Looking for something for the younger crowd? ​Painting with Water Take & Make​ ​pages from ​Planet Cute: Just Add Water​ will be available for pickup at the library starting ​Jan. 4 ​for K-5th graders.

Create a beautiful glimpse of Spring to hang in your window with our ​Dried Flower Suncatcher Take & Make ​kits available ​Jan. 11-16 ​and while supplies last. Each kit will contain an envelope of dried flowers, contact paper, jute twine, and a round piece of card.

“Take Care” Take & Make:​ ​Sometimes we just need to do a little extra to take care of ourselves - especially this time of year.

Let us help with this free, little kit we've put together just for you, which will include items such as: coloring/activity sheets, hot beverage items, candles, chocolate, a craft, and a book list! Call or stop by the library to request, starting​ Jan. 11. ​Open to adults and teens.

Origami Live!: ​Mai Hirashita, Japanese Outreach Initiative (JOI) Coordinator for BGSU, will lead us in another live teaching session of origami on ​Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m. 

This program is open to all ages and will take place via Zoom. Receive an origami paper Take & Make kit through Curbside Pickup starting ​Jan. 5, ​and don’t forget to email [email protected] to register and receive the Zoom link.

Virtual Family Trivia Night:​ Grab the family and put your brains together! On ​Tues., Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m.,​ Ms. Lauren will have a Family Trivia Night using Kahoot and Zoom (two mobile devices and/or laptops/computers are required for gameplay.)

Family groups may consist of six members or less, and questions are for late elementary and up, but are all family friendly. Register by emailing [email protected] by Jan. 13.​ Instructions are to be emailed or you may schedule a pickup for a printed version. The winning family is to be announced on social media (​hello, bragging rights!​)

Silly Snowflake Craft​ Take & Make available​ Jan. 19-25​ or while supplies last followed by a ​Zoom Snowflake Storytime​ on ​Jan. 25 at 6:30p.m.​ Join Mrs Esther and Bernie for a time of chilly stories and games about Winter weather.

Take & Make crafts are available by curbside pickup request. To take part in the Snowflake Storytime please register in advance to obtain the Zoom meeting details.

Services Update
The health and safety of our customers and staff at the Bluffton Public Library is a top priority and the library is working hard to keep services available. At the time of this press release, the library is open for Curbside Pickup only. The library will review services and update as needed so be sure to check blufftonpubliclibrary.org/covid19​ for current services updates.

Curbside Pickup hours are:
●  Mondays-Thursdays: 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
●  Fridays: 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
●  Saturdays: 10 a.m-1 p.m.

Patrons may schedule a pickup by filling out the online form at ​blufftonpubliclibrary.org/pickup​ or by calling the library during Curbside hours. For more information about these services, email [email protected]​ or call the library.

Please notice​: The library is closed on ​Jan. 1 and 18. ​Due dates are adjusted accordingly. Don’t forget that the Ohio Digital Library remains open 24/7 from your computer or mobile device! The library’s ​Beanstack Challenges​ also continue, including:

●  10 to Try​ (geared for ages 12-adult) and ​Kids 10 to Try ​(geared for ages 5-11) are challenges to read a book in each of 10 categories, track reading, and share your favorite discoveries with the library and your fellow readers.

●  Mindfulness​ (geared for all ages - kids may need assistance) invites you to take a deep breath, notice your surroundings, and acknowledge how you are feeling. Try this challenge and earn 10 new badges as you take some much-needed “me” time.

●  1000 Books Before Kindergarten​ now available through Beanstack!
