An Amstutz, Neuenschwander, Suter and Luginbuhl connection

Our Swiss connection - part 23

This column follows Anna Amstutz, born in Switzerland to Michael Amstutz and Barbara Lehman Amstutz.

Her first husband, Christian Neuenschwander, died at an early age. Anna’s second husband, Johannes Suter, also died at an early age. Anna’s third husband was David C. Luginbuhl. David was married twice before he married Anna.

Anna died at age 41 on April 10, 1858.

Christian Neuenschwander
Christian Neuenschwander was born Aug. 15, 1809, to Daniel and Barbara Schumacher Neuenschwander on a farm near Boron, Switzerland.

Boron is one of the many village in the Jura region of Switzerland. Christian married Anna Amstutz, near Florimont, France, on May 4, 1835.

They came to America soon after their marriage. Both his and Anna’s parents remained in Switzerland.

Christian died March 31, 1839, at age 29, as a result of tuberculosis. The couple had no children.

An uncle of Christian, John Schumacher, came to America with Christian and Anna. John Schumacher married Marie Steiner on Aug. 7, 1813, in France. He died at age 68 and Marie died at age 61. They had no children and are buried in the Old Mennonite Cemetery.

Christian also had a sister, Katherine, who married John F. Steiner who also immigrated to this community.

A second uncle of Christian, Michael Neuenschwander, was the Bluffton-Pandora Swiss community’s first settlers.

Johannes Suter
Following Christian’s death, Anna married Johannes Suter on Aug. 12, 1839, in Riley Township. The couple had one son, Christian, who was born in September 1840. Johannes died on Aug. 30, 1841, at the age of 24.

David C. Luginbuhl
Anna married for a third time to David C. Luginbuhl on May 4, 1845. He had also been married twice before and had six children in these previous marriages.

David C. and Anna had four children of their own. David C., died at age 75 on Feb. 1, 1894. David C. and Anna are buried in the Old Mennonite Cemetery.
