Saves earn Bluffton men a win over MSJ
The Bluffton University men's soccer team netted a goal in each half en route to the 2-1 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021. Bluffton improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the Heartland Conference, while the Lions slipped to 2-9 and 1-2 in the HCAC.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the opening period but the only score came when Elijah Zimmerman (Archbold) capitalized on an MSJ misfire in minute 32. His seventh tally of the season pushed Bluffton to a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Beavers made it a two-goal spread when Benjamin Davidson (Greenville) raced down the sideline in front of the Bluffton bench and found senior Jacob Kiger (Groveport/St. Charles Prep) in the middle of the field for his first goal of the 2021 fall campaign.
Freshman keeper Angel Velasco-Urbina (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) was busy between the pipes with eight saves on Wednesday afternoon. Kiger ripped a team-high four shots, while Zimmerman and JJ Meyer (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) finished with three apiece.
Bluffton piled up 21 shots, compared to 17 for the visitors. MSJ fired seven more corner kicks (9-2) with its final one resulting in the only Lion score at the 89:35 mark.
The Beavers will head to Lexington, Ky., for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with conference heavyweight Transylvania University on the back end of a women's and men's doubleheader.
