Beavers stun Transy 1-0 in double overtime

It took 103:34 but the result was worth the wait as the Bluffton University men's soccer team stunned Transylvania University with a 1-0 victory in double OT on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. When junior defender Maxwell Kennedy (Strongsville) delivered with just over six minutes on the clock in the second extra session, Bluffton snapped a string of 12 straight losses to a Transylvania team that was 19-1 against the Beavers all-time coming into Saturday's contest.

With the victory, Bluffton improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Heartland Conference. Transy fell to 2-6-2 and 0-3-1 in the HCAC.

Transy piled up a 27-6 advantage in shots during regulation, but the Beavers made a statement with three shots during the first overtime. All the statistics went out the window when Kennedy found the back the net in minute 104, giving Bluffton its second win ever over the Pioneers.

Sophomore Elijah Zimmerman (Archbold) paced the Beavers with four shots, while freshman Jackson Clark (Mount Blanchard/Riverdale) and junior Elijah Grieser (Wauseon/Pettisville) added two attempts apiece. Kennedy took one shot and made it a historic one for the visitors.

Freshman keeper Angel Velasco-Urbina (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) notched seven saves while helping Bluffton to its third shutout of the season.

Transy was called for six more fouls (9-3) and the home team finished with a 29-10 edge in total shots. Both squads finished the match with seven corner kicks on their resume.

Bluffton will be back on the road Wednesday, Oct. 13, when the Beavers travel to Richmond, Ind., for a matchup with the Quakers and a chance to extend their two-match winning streak. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Earlham College.
