Carey rallies late to nip Lady Pirates
By Cort Reynolds
Visiting Carey scored five runs in their final at bat to overcome a two-run deficit and edge the Bluffton High School softball team 10-9 in a wild season opener on a cold Tuesday evening, March 29.
The Pirate girls (0-1) trailed 5-0 after four innings, but rallied with an explosive seven-run fifth frame.
Yet Carey regained the lead with five runs in the seventh. Bluffton threatened to come back by plating two runs in the home seventh, but came up just short.
Lauren Bassett smacked a triple and double to drive in two runs and pace the Lady Pirate offense.
Addie Basinger contributed one RBI with two hits.
Pirates Ashley Fleece and Olivia Matthews each stroked one hit. Dyllan Worcester and Olivia Hobensack both collected two RBI on one hit apiece.
Mackenzie Simons paced the Blue Devil girls by smacking three doubles to drive home three runs.
Riley Broadman cracked a home run and doubled to plate two Carey runs. Kynlee Phillips added two RBI.
Carey narrowly out-hit the Pirates, 10-9.
