Photo-story: Cory-Rawson Community Day
Cory-Rawson Schools superintendent Jay Clark invited the Icon to witness Community Day on Tuesday, May 10. Originally scheduled for a week earlier, cold, wet, crummy weather was replaced with a picture perfect day for working hard and playing hard.
Clark explained, “The goal of the day is to connect with our community. Everyone participates in some way.” As the attached pictures reveal, students spread mulch, cleaned barrels, scraped and painted, and more. In fact, all grades preschool-12th spent the morning doing service projects. A total of 540 students participated in the event.
It is part of a Hornet Strong initiative that emphasizes, in Clark’s words, that “we learn for ourselves and we learn to better our community.”
Younger students worked at the schools, while high school students worked in Jenera, Mt. Cory and Rawson. Projects were mostly in the parks but students also helped a resident plant flowers.
In the afternoon, the students celebrated Hornet Strong with treats and games, including kickball, ga-ga ball, relay races, cornhole and 9-square volleyball.
All three villages helped develop projects. Local churches were at the school to serve treats. Businesses provided donations and landscaping equipment and materials.
