Task force on street safety

Does the "complete streets" concept ring a bell? The Village of Bluffton has created a Complete Streets Task force to create a plan to improve the safety of walkers and bike riders.

On June 22 the Icon joined a stroll along several streets with a small group task force members, Allen County health and planning staffers, and residents to test drive a feedback form, a.k.a. "Sidewalks, streets, and crossings walk audit."

It was a hot evening at 5:30 p.m., which made for plenty of traffic and little competition on the sidewalks. We took a look at improvements to Jefferson Street that made it easier and more comfortable cross near Cobb Lake, as well as unimproved segments of Elm and Cherry Streets. We practiced using the form along a length of Jackson St.

The form had checklists for sidewalks, cracks and uneven surfaces, landscaping and streetlights.

We were also asked to consider if the street seemed appropriate for use by people of all ages and abilities. Were there bike lanes or trails? Did we feel safe and comfortable?

Observing the traffic in our orange and yellow safety vests, it didn't seem as though many drivers were speeding. However, none stopped for the ten of us while we waited at marked crosswalks.

The complete streets concept, of course, isn't really new. The village has made 10 street improvements over the last eight years. More complete streets and increased use of active transportation will bring health, economic, environmental and social benefits.

Once the audit forms are finalized, they will be available for individuals to provide input on streets that they feel need improvement to become safer. Watch the Icon for an update when they become available.
