Donald "Don" L. Overmyer taught at Bluffton High School
Donald "Don" L. Overmyer, 95, passed away June 4, 2025 at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. Don was born August 15, 1929 in Antwerp, Ohio to the late Paul and Orpha (Shaw) Overmyer. On November 22, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Hawkins Overmyer who preceded him in death on February 28, 2024.
Don was a 1947 graduate of Antwerp High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After being discharged, Don graduated from the Ohio State University and later received his master's degree from Bowling Green State University. He spent over thirty years as a teacher mostly teaching vocational agriculture at Bluffton High School.
Don proudly mentored many student teachers during his career in education. He was a member of the Bluffton First Methodist Church and was active with the Bluffton Lions Club. Don was a very kind and respected man who loved his family, his church, and his community. He was always willing to lend a hand, enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and homemade ice cream.
Survivors include two children, Melissa (Rick) Pottenger of Concord Township, Ohio, Don (Jose Genis) Overmyer II of Palm Springs, California; two grandchildren, Matthew (Stacie) Pottenger of Savannah, Georgia, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Anspach of Myersville, Maryland and a great-granddaughter, Flora Joanne Anspach.
Don was also preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Don's services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 9, 2025 at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton with Pastor Bob Clinger and William Herr officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be Monday, June 9, 2025, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship fund at Bluffton First Methodist Church.
