Dangerous dog incident on SR 103
Dog shot and killed by off-duty deputy, woman and child unharmed
JUNE 15 BLUFFTON POLICE DEPT. MEDIA RELEASE__On June 14, 2025 at approximately 2:43 p.m. Bluffton police officers responded to a report of an incident involving a dog running at large that had cornered a woman and a young child in the area of 70 State Route 103.
According to witness accounts and preliminary investigation, an off-duty deputy happened to be in the area and observed the dog behaving aggressively toward the individuals. The deputy quickly exited his vehicle to assist and protect the civilians.
As the deputy attempted to intervene, the dog charged at him in an aggressive manner. Despite efforts to deescalate the situation, the deputy was forced to discharge his firearm in self-defense and to prevent further harm. Unfortunately, the dog was fatally wounded as a result of the incident.
The woman and child were not injured during the incident and were escorted to safety. The dog's owner has been identified, and the matter remains under review by our department in accordance with standard procedure.
This was an unfortunate but necessary action taken in a rapidly developing situation. We are grateful for the quick response of the off-duty deputy and thankful that no individuals were harmed.
The Bluffton Police Department reminds all pet owners of the importance of maintaining control of their animals at all times. Incidents like this can often be prevented by ensuring pets are safely secured and leashed when outside.
No further information is available at this time. Updates will be provided as appropriate.
EDITOR'S NOTE: From Bluffton Veterinary Clinic on Facebook: "To put the minds of clients at ease, it was not one of the dogs being boarded at our facility that was involved in the unfortunate event that apparently happened near the Bluffton Vet Hospital. We ... wanted to be sure owners know their animals are safe and secure."
