AE defeats Cory for 3rd place in McDonald's girls basketball tourney

BLUFFTON__Allen East junior guard Evelyn Lehman buried seven three-point goals and tallied 23 points to lead the Mustangs to a 67-40 win over Cory-Rawson Saturday night in the consolation game of the McDonald’s Holiday tournament.

AE improved to 1-1 with the third-place win, while Cory fell to 0-2 after the defeat.

The game was tied 12-12 after one period. But the Mustangs broke in front behind a 15-6 second stanza to forge a 27-18 lead at halftime. Lehman scored eight points on two trifectas in the second stanza, while Brooklynn Crumrine added seven markers.

AE then pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Hornets 40-22 after intermission. 

Lehman earned all-tournament team honors by scoring 45 points in the two games, 11 more than anyone else.

Mustang junior Crumrine netted 13 of her career-high 22 points in the first half. She drilled three triples. Rylie Jordan tallied all 12 of her markers in the second half as she made six field goals.

Sophomore Harper Freisner added six points for AE.

Lehman sank two triples in each of the last three quarters after hitting one in the first stanza.

Katelyn Duffman and Libbie Kempf led C-R with 10 points apiece. Kempf scored eight of her markers in the opening period to keep the tied after eight minutes of play.

Ady Duffman added eight markers. Katelyn Duffman was the Hornet representative on the all-tournament team after leading her team in scoring both games.

AE nailed 16 two-point goals and drained 10 triples. The Mustangs sank five of nine foul shots (56 percent).

Cory canned 15 baskets, all inside the arc. The Hornets converted 10 of 14 free throws (71 percent).
