Bluffton University

Season-end honors were earned by several Bluffton University fall sport athletes. Here’s a summary.

Men’s soccer

The Bluffton University men's soccer program saw two individuals recognized when the Heartland Conference handed out its 2019 post-season hardware. Sophomore Dalton Taynor (Troy/Miami East) was named Second Team All-HCAC, the highest Heartland Conference honor for a men's soccer player since 2014.

Freshman keeper Tanner Newport (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) notched honorable mention recognition for his work in goal.

Alaina Shearer, a seasoned speaker and professional change maker, will share her personal and professional journey toward positive social change at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19,  in Yoder Recital Hall.

In Shearer’s professional journey, she quickly realized after graduation that extreme sexism and gender discrimination were rampant in her chosen industry - broadcast journalism and then, again, in her second career path: advertising. In 2016, Shearer realized this wasn’t sustainable and founded her own company – Women in Digital (now Together Digital).

Beaver basketball preview

With Bluffton's top five scorers returning after a trip to the Heartland Conference semi-finals, the men's basketball team is excited as the 2019-20 campaign is rapidly approaching.

The Beavers surprised the pundits with a 4th-place finish in the conference after coming in 7th when the pre-season poll was released.

Head Coach Guy Neal wrapped up 30 years at the helm and he is now looking forward to season 31 when the Beavers hit the hardwood in 2019-20.

2007 Bluffton graduate Jenna Liechty Martin will share “Why Living My Best Life Depends on You: Camp as a Place of Interconnection and Joy,” at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

Martin is the executive director of Camp Friedenswald in Cassopolis, Mich. During Forum, Martin will discuss how serving at Camp Friedenswald has created an experience for her to form genuine community and connection, which is vital to living her best life.

The Bluffton University women's basketball team opened up its season at home on Nov. 11, against Alma College.

Despite a two-hour delay due to a severe snowstorm that kept Alma on the road for over seven hours, the Beavers were able to pull off a 62-49 victory over the Scots. With the victory, Bluffton starts its season out at 1-0, while Alma is 0-1.

Bluffton University’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee is hosting Youth Night from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Elementary-aged children and their families are invited to Sommer Center to interact with Bluffton University athletes, enjoy pizza and take part in activities planned by each team on campus.

Activities include knockout (basketball), PK shootout (soccer), putt-putt (golf), sharks and minnows (cross country/track and field), balloon volleyball (volleyball), and football drills/obstacles (football). Participating kids will receive “Future Beaver” goodie bags.
