Dr. Rebecca Janzen, assistant professor of Spanish at Bluffton University, will present her speech titled, “We See Them but We Don’t Know Them: Mexican Ideas About Mennonites,” for Forum at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23 in Founders Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Her argument centers on the perceptions of Low German-speaking Mennonites in Mexican film and photography. Janzen will argue that by better understanding how Mexicans understand Mennonites, bridges between the two can be built.
Senior graphic design majors, Beth Ross, Paulding, Ohio, Abby Graber, Goshen, Ind., and Jenny Brown, St. Marys, Ohio, will be available to discuss their most prominent work from the four years they have spent at Bluffton during a reception to be held in the Grace Albrecht Gallery of Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 2-4 p.m.
The exhibit is open from Feb. 22 through March 4. The respective collections feature: digital prints, sculpture, painting, drawing and photography.
Dr. Naima Johnston-Bush will perform, “Spiritual Songs,” at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in Yoder Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Johnston-Bush will use multimedia to create a musical adventure that explores the Negro spiritual as a historical American art form. She will sketch the history of this expression of faith through music from the 1600s to the present.
Documentary filmmaker, Ellie Bernstein, will host a movie event starting with an informal conversation at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall. Bernstein will show her documentary, “Ghost Town: The Hebron Story,” at 7 p.m.
“Ghost Town,” tells the story of families in Hebron, which is located in the West Bank of Palestine.
Bluffton University’s junior nutrition students will host its 2016 Cooking Series from Feb. 22 to April 18 in the first floor of Berky Hall. Lunch and dinner options are available. The event is free and open to the public.
Each session includes a 20-30 minute cooking demonstration, nutritional information and a full meal. Lunches will be held from noon-1 p.m. on Mondays, starting on Monday, Feb. 22. This meal will consist of foods that conquer winter depression. Monday lunches will be held on Feb. 29, March 14 and 21 and April 4, 11 and 18.
BLUFFTON, Ohio - Bluffton University’s Terrill Webb (Kenton) turned in a record-setting performance at Ohio Northern Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
The junior won the pole vault with a school-record of 12-5.50, besting the field by over eight inches while also shattering her school-record 12-0 vault set at Findlay less than a month ago. Webb's 12-5.50 is a new Joe Banks meet record as well!
