Bluffton University

Tickets are available for the next performance in the 2014-15 Bluffton University Artist Series, by the Palace Theatre Big Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Yoder Recital Hall.

Taking place simultaneously at the dawn of human history, in the 20th century and at the end of the world—complete with talking dinosaurs—Bluffton University’s fall play is zany to say the least. But by refusing to obey the rules of time, “The Skin of Our Teeth” serves as an allegory to the human condition that remains relevant in 2014.

While the plot may seem nonsensical, its messages are clear, says Dr. Melissa Friesen, professor of theatre and communication at Bluffton and director of the play.

Ken Heffner, director of student activities at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., will reflect on the relationship between the church and popular culture in a Bluffton University forum Oct. 28.

Speaking at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall, he will address “Why Should We Care About Arcade Fire? A Christian Approach to Popular Culture.” His presentation is free and open to the public.

Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center will host “Time/Line,” drawings by Boston-based artist Kevin Townsend, beginning Oct. 27 in the Grace Albrecht Gallery.

The exhibit is free and open to the public through Nov. 25. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. on opening day, Oct. 27.

Bluffton University will host a 20-hour mediation training program for interested community members, as well as Bluffton students, faculty and staff, from Oct. 24-26.

The trainers, Lorraine Stutzman-Amstutz and Jackie Wells, will focus on basic principles of restorative justice and mediation, and will wrap up by sharing ways to implement practices in community, prison and educational settings.
