On the heels of another memorable United States-Russia meeting in Olympic hockey, a Findlay, Ohio, resident who faced the Soviet Union on Olympic ice will share his experiences Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Bluffton University.

Weldon Olson, a member of U.S. hockey teams that won a silver medal in 1956 and a gold medal in 1960, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Stutzman Lecture Hall in Bluffton’s Centennial Hall.

Arvis Averette, social work coordinator at the Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture, will discuss “The Economics of 2014 and the BSW Social Work Programs’ Reaction to Its Implications” in a Bluffton University forum on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

This year’s Smucker Lecture in social work at Bluffton, the presentation will begin at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Composer Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass” and high school seniors vying for music scholarships will be featured at Bluffton University’s Masterworks Concert on Sunday, Feb. 23, in Yoder Recital Hall. Admission to the 2:30 p.m. concert is free; a free-will offering will be taken to help defray concert expenses.

Dr. Mark J. Suderman, professor of music, will conduct the University Chorale, the Bluffton Choral Society and a community chamber orchestra in their performance of “Sunrise Mass.”

The week of Feb. 10-14 was the first Celebrate the Library Week at Bluffton University’s Musselman Library.

On “Wellness Wednesday,” Feb. 12, Dr. Sarah Cecire, a professor of education, tried out a FitDesk, an exercise bike with an attached desk.

Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Myers, a professor and director of Bluffton’s dietetics program, checked out Favorite READS, a display of books of particular importance or interest to individual faculty and staff members.

The pinning took place during one of several campus competitions— athletic and academic—held Feb. 7 in connection with the opening of the Winter Olympics.

Ndlovu, a junior from Zimbabwe, rapidly read the names of 30 nations in the geography contest, and Cook and two opponents had to find as many as they could on their respective maps.

 

Bluffton University’s Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band will present the university’s annual winter instrumental concert at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16, in Yoder Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken during intermission for music scholarships.

Dr. Adam Schattschneider, professor of music, conducts the Jazz Ensemble, whose seven numbers will include “A Salute to Glenn Miller” and arrangements of “MacArthur Park,” “Frankie and Johnny” and Cole Porter’s “Night and Day.”
