Bluffton University

Bluffton University's Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), an educational program for retirees, is offering 10 courses between Sept. 19 and Nov. 10.

The fall term costs $80, which allows participants to take as many courses as they wish and to join in other ILR activities. Individuals may take one or two courses for $30 each. Registration and course fees, if applicable, are due at the time of registration.

Unless noted otherwise below, classes will meet in the ILR classroom, located in Shultz Hall of Riley Court on campus.

Single-event tickets go on sale Monday, Aug. 1, for the 2011-12 Bluffton University Artist Series, featuring The Four Freshmen and The Ohio State University Flute Troupe, as well as the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, the Pridonoff Piano Duo and juggler-comedian Mark Nizer.

Bluffton University's 14th annual alumni and friends golf scramble on July 16 raised more than $8,000 for university athletics through TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Bluffton.

Harrod's Colonial Golfers Club hosted the event, which drew 122 golfers from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Florida.

The winners of the scramble received monetary prizes. Richard Bindernagel '79 of Middlebury Heights, OH teamed with Dennis Thompson '78 (Elida, Ohio), James Frisk '78 (Wooster, Ohio) and Jeffrey Deyling '78 (Parma, Ohio) all took home first-place honors.

Bluffton University will offer two mathematics workshops Aug. 9-11 for middle and high school math teachers and intervention specialists.

Aug. 1 is the registration deadline for both "Become a Master Teacher in Middle School Probability and Statistics Topics," taught by Marilyn Link, a retired teacher from Coldwater, and "Using Rich Problems to Learn and to Teach Good High School Mathematics, Course 2." That course, which differs from last year's similarly named workshop, will be taught by Duane Bollenbacher, an adjunct faculty member at Bluffton.

Matt Ferguson on right

When Matt Ferguson was a high school sophomore in 2004, a group of his friends left a Christmas present on his doorstep-a life-size, cardboard cutout of President George W. Bush.

Ferguson had volunteered with the Miami County, Ohio, Republican Party during Bush's re-election campaign earlier that year. "That's when I started building the relationships that have really helped me out," says the 2010 Bluffton University alumnus, who met a number of local officials, including his U.S. Rep., and now Speaker of the House, John Boehner.

The Bluffton connection to Camp Friedenswald includes (front row, left to right) Christine Amstutz, Portia Amstutz, Kristen Rohdes and Jill Schlabach, and (back row, left to right) Eric Martin, Blake Zickafoose, Bracton Eicher, Gregg Beitler and Darin Gundy.

Many things have changed since the campers arrived for that first summer at Michigan's Camp Friedenswald in 1951. But one thing has remained constant through the years-people working diligently to aid in the spiritual formation and growth of the children and young adults in attendance.

Recent years have seen the calling of many Bluffton University students, alumni and faculty and staff members to join those individuals and become a part of the ministry of Friedenswald as permanent staff, volunteers, summer staff or camp pastors.
