Sunday evening - all the ice cream and music you can eat

Findlay High School’s steel drum band, Pantasia, will play at a free concert on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Mennonite Memorial Home (MMH), 410 W. Elm St., Bluffton.

MMH has hosted the annual Concert on the Lawn since 2005.  The Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Service Group will serve ice cream, and ice water will also be available.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and dress for the weather.

Noteworthy Community Choir auditions this month

FROM ADA ICON - Noteworthy Community Choir was established as a non-profit choral organization to develop personal and community artistry.  Twenty-five singers joined the opening season. Auditions are being held throughout August.  

From “Treble Makers” to “Expressions,” there is a choir available for singers ages 6 - 86+.  “Sounds” and “Voices” are offered in both Ada and Lima, and “Treble Makers” and “Expressions” are offered in Ada.

The Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation presented Caleb Dunlap, a Pandora-Gilboa High School graduate, with a $1,500 Frederick & Evelyn Fountain Scholarship Award.

Dunlap is one of 100 members selected to receive a 2018 scholarship award from the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Scholarship Foundation. Dunlap is attending University of Northwestern Ohio majoring in B.A. Marketing.

According to the website dailycaring.com, smart speakers, like Echo and Google Home, can improve the quality of life for older adults with Alzheimer’s or dementia as well as for seniors with mobility limitations and other health conditions.

One evening a few months ago, Alexa was the hit of the party at Willow Ridge.  Elder Richard Wiechart brought the “smart speaker” out into the dining room and others gathered around asking Alexa to play favorite songs. 

“She really livened things up,” Wiechart laughed.  “Sometimes it can get pretty quiet around here.”

Mitch and Ann Kingsley of 313 Campus Drive were awarded the Garden of the Month for July 2018 by Bluffton in Bloom. 

The Kingsleys took a low lying area in their yard and created a beautiful and water absorbing rain garden. 

"We applaud them for their creative thinking in changing a problem into an asset," said Nancy Benroth, a Bluffton in Bloom committee member.

Ellie Hartzler participated in the Ohio State Fair clothing days this year.  Last year she won the Clock Award for Sew Fun when she sewed a skirt. 

This year she won Outstanding of the Day for the category Tops for Tweens.  Her grandmother, Marybeth Hartzler, is her coach.
