Her entry was picked from the Icon's "Sweetest Day" contest

Janice Shafer, resident of Vance Street Apartments, Bluffton, is the winner of the Bluffton Icon "Sweetest Day" contest. Her entry was selected as the winner of all persons nominated for the award.

She was nominated by her neice Kim Robinette, who says, "She truly is the sweetest." Janice received a large bouquet of flowers from the Icon.

Shared with them a vision of the university's future

Dr. Jane Wood, Bluffton University president, shared a vision for the university’s future and told about graduate success during her address at Monday’s Lima Rotary Club meeting at the Civic Center.

Focusing on three “momentum makers,” Dr. Wood shared areas involving academics, student engagement and athletics with the Lima audience.

“Over the next 12 to 18 months we will highlight these three areas as what we believe makes us stand out,” she said, based upon a summer planning retreat with the university cabinet.

Dr. Mark Yoder took this series of photos of Jackson Steinmetz scoring a goal at the 40-minute mark in Wednesday’s BHS boys’ soccer tournament game against Lincolnview. Luke Young provided the goal assist.

Bluffton won the game 5-0 to advance to district play versus Continental at Kalida on Wednesday, Oct. 24, with a 5 p.m. kickoff.

One of 10 selected for gifts that elders contribute to their communities

Joanne Niswander, Maple Crest Senior Living Village, Bluffton, has been selected as one of 10 individuals to be featured in an exhibit at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting & EXPO, Oct. 28-31 in Philadelphia. 

“Words of Wisdom” is part of a Public Ageism display located at the Philadelphia City Hall courtyard.  The exhibit will be up for the duration of the conference and is designed to educate the people of Philadelphia about the amazing gifts our elders contribute to their communities. 

Grace Paquin talked about her experiences training a dog for the Leader Dog organization during the Oct. 2 Bluffton Lions Club meeting.

Grace is involved in the program with her father, Walt, and is doing this as part of a Girl Scout project. Eventually, her training dog, Nova, will return to the Leader Dog organization for formal training to become a dog for a person who may have vision or hearing problems or both.

Hilty Home will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10.  The bazaar will take place inside the home, 314 Hilty Drive, Pandora.  Friday’s hours are 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and the bazaar will run Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

According to Dee Steffen, activities coordinator, the event will feature crafts and baked goods for sale, along with homemade soup and sandwiches.  Proceeds from the bazaar will help fund activities for the elders at Hilty Home.  For more information, call 419-384-3218.
