FDA issues warning statement on supplements containing vinpocetine

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning statement on certain dietary supplements.

This warning focuses on dietary supplements that contain vinpocetine. This substance may be referred to on dietary product labels as Vinca minor extract, common periwinkle extract or lesser periwinkle extract.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States regardless of age, race or skin color.

The disease incidence is reaching an epidemic level. Over 5.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year, and approximately 15,000 people die each year from this disease. The current estimate is that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center Volunteer/Auxiliary Resources president, Joyce Gerdeman, presented a check for $240,000 to Ronda Lehman, president of St. Rita’s, during St. Rita’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon recently. 

This donation was made on behalf of all St. Rita’s volunteers which includes 438 adults, 82 college students, 132 summer teen volunteers, 125 shadowing students and 209 supporting members. 275 volunteers were in attendance at the event.

Meet Bluffton Farmers Market vendors

Bluffton Farmers Market is the place to be on Saturday mornings in town. According to the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce, our town "boasts the best farmers market in northwest Ohio."

In celebration of our small but mighty farmers market, the Icon will be featuring a vendor each week over the course of the summer.

To kick off this series, the Icon features Probst Family Farm.
